Bronx, New York (The Weekly Vice) -- Cheyenne Cherry, a 17-year-old New York teen was arrested Wednesday after she admitted to throwing a kitten into an oven and roasting the animal to death.
According to ASPCA officials, Cherry admitted to killing her ex-roommates kitten while brushing the incident off as a joke.
"I hate cats," Cherry was quoted as telling investigators as they probed the grizzly details of the kitten's murder.
Investigators say Cherry and an unidentified juvenile broke into her neighbor's Tinton Avenue apartment last Saturday and proceeded to trash the residence. She then grabbed the victim's kitten, threw it into the stove and turned up the heat.
The pair then fled the apartment leaving the kitten, named Tiger Lily, to burn.
"She didn't want to hear the cat crying and scratching on the oven door," said ASPCA Asst. Director, Joe Pentangelo.
The tragedy was discovered by neighbors who noticed smoke and a foul odor coming from the apartment. When firefighters arrived, they found Tiger Lily's smoldered remains. Investigators say the kitten was burned so badly, a necropsy had to be performed to determine the kitten's sex.
Cherry was charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, burglary, arson, reckless endangerment and criminal mischief. She was released into her mother's custody a short time after her arrest.
The community, outraged by the gruesome act and Cherry's dismissive attitude towards the crime, is asking that she be charged as an adult. Online petitions have been set up, requesting a modification of those charges.
Cherry deleted her MySpace profile - obviously choosing to hide under a desk - however we resurrected the cached version of her page.
It's kind of symbolic. The kitten couldn't run away and now Cherry can't run away. Enjoy Karma, Cheyenne Cherry.

The outrage of this case has nothing to do with race. After all, her ex-roommate is a victim. What about her?
Phrases like 'Ghetto' may generalize to some degree. But it's not any more racial than terms like 'white trash', 'redneck', or 'cracker'. I never see people getting their nylons in a knot when people use those stereotypes.
And I want to point out that the biggest outrage is coming from the community itself - who is disgusted by this woman's disgusting, heartless behavior.

This is just tragic. The suffering of that small animal makes me want to cry. The person that did this is no child and deserves to be punished as an adult. She has a history of criminal behavior and well on her way to being a career criminal. I wouldn't want her wandering the streets of my neighborhood.

I lived in Newark long time ego, and my black neighbor threw a 3 month old puppy to her fighting pitbull into her backyard, two days later the pitbulls tore the puppy to picies and ate most of it, then this woman put what was left of the puppy on top of the dog cage, when I called ACPCA, Police, Sanitation and Animal Control they all laughed at me,non one even came to investigate, it took that woman one week to finally throw away the remains that were blowing up with gases in the garbage bag facing my kitchen window.

RE Crazy neighbor in Newark, I am a girl, not a guy, I forced the fire department to issue a citation to have the dogs locked in the cage until these people moved out, because the dogs block the exit door in the back.
But this neighbor slashed my car tires, stole and damaged two of my cars, and threaned to kill me a on a daily basis, by the way she is a school bus driver for Monmouth county NJ, she has a criminal history.
It cost me my job, two cars, and endless terrorist threats but I could not hear the cats scream at night anymore. I dropped the charges against her because she told me if she went to jail, her family would kill me.

I heard about this two days ago and absolutely lost it. I cried for nearly an hour. I cannot fathom how any human being can do this to a kitten - not even a cat, a kitten! - and not care at all.
