Albuquerque, New Mexico (The Weekly Vice) -- Tiffany Toribio, a 23-year-old New Mexico woman was arrested Thursday after she confessed to suffocating her son, reviving him and then suffocating him again to death.

The murder began to come to light on Saturday after a woman spotted a black shoe sticking out of the sand at a playground at Alvarado Park in Albuquerque. The find led to the shocking discovery of dead three-year-old Tyrus Toribio.

Eight days later - amid a nationwide appeal for clues as to the child's identity - Toribio told Albuquerque police she was the child's mother and would turn herself in. After initially providing a false name to authorities, she eventually confessed the grizzly details of the child's May 13 murder.

"She placed her hand over her son's mouth and nose and suffocated him," said police chief Ray Schultz. "She had second thoughts about what she did."

Investigators say Toribio then performed CPR on her son, which brought him back to life. Apparently unsatisfied with her decision, she then proceeded to suffocate the child again - this time to it's completion, according to Schultz.

When detectives asked Toribio why she did it, she explained that "she did not want him to grow up with no one caring about him, the same way that she had grown up where nobody had cared about her," said Schultz.

Police say Toribio was recently homeless because she had been kicked out of her mother's house and a friend's apartment for ignoring her son. Family members who say they are devastated by the news of the child's murder told police that they hadn't seen the child since last Tuesday.

Investigators described Toribio as a detached mother with no permanent address. Friends who knew Toribio explained that she hadn't provided emotional support to the child - and sometimes wouldn't provide food.

Toribio told detectives that sometime last Wednesday morning she and Tyrus were walking in Alvarado Park when they came to the playground area.

"Some time around 1 o'clock in the morning, she went to the area of the gym equipment. While laying in the gym equipment with her son, she placed her hand over her son's mouth and nose and suffocated him," explained Schultz.

After the child died, Toribio went under the gym equipment, dug a hole and buried her son

Toribio now faces first-degree-murder charges and is being held on suicide watch at the Metropolitan Detention Center. Sher reportedly attempted suicide just hours after confessing to the murder of her son.

This is so sad, maybe the first time she suffocated him she was out of her mind or something but she revived him so maybe she realised what she had done, but how could she then go and put him through that all over again, she did not want him to grow up with no one caring about him, so didn't she care about him then? This is tragic, R I P little guy.

What a sick bitch. I hope they give her the death penalty.

There are two tragedies in this story. First that a child is dead. The second tragedy is that the woman failed at her suicide attempt.

She'll spend her whole life sucking up the public's resources.

Now if they put her to hard labor, I'd go for that, but they won't. She'll sit on her bunk reading Opera rags for the next few decades.

RIP Tyrus

I pray for that poor little boy, and can only take comfort in the fact that he will never again be in the hands of someone who would wish him harm.

I did notice that in the article, more then one time this woman was put out of the place that she was living because of the abuse/neglect that she put this child through. It is truly sad that this little boy had to die because no one would step up and report the mother to athorities-had they done so, this little boys may still be alive, and could have found a wonderful home with parents who would have doted on him.

She was ignoring her son, so her family and friends kicked her out. What sense did that make? If they were smart enough to know she wasn't being a good parent to her son, why wouldn't they just kick her out?!

The family and friends could have said, your son can stay but you gotta go... but what are the odds she'd leave him there?? He was probably her ticket into most places.

I never can get over the parents who hurt their own children... it's the worst sort of crime.

What the fuck is wrong with this bitch? And her family/friends should also go down for child endangerment, or failure to report the endangerment of the child. That poor baby may still be alive today if they had. SMH...

this woman seems to have a history of mental illness or a victim of abuse...what floors me is that how family and friends let a child be homeless like that...Toribio might be right about the "not being loved" part

Dhe said: "I didn't want him to grow up with nobody caring about him the same way I grew up" -- That's a stupid, lame excuse. Why did she have him on the first place? She could have educated herself to provide for the child she chose to have. Blaming others is always the easiest way out for morons like her.

what is wrong with people? I know raising kids can be tough but come on. How wacked do you have to be to suffocate a child? Twice at that! My son died and I would give anything to have him back. If parents can't deal with the responsibility of having kids they should give them up for adoption. There are plenty of ppl that would provide a nice home for him that can't have kids theirselves. I hope you get the death penalty or rot away in prison for the rest of ur life.

How dare this waste of life play the victim?! it seems like he had people who cared about him, she seems like the only one who didnt care. dumb bitch! and to think, she killed him and then revived him, only to kill him again. that poor child had to go through this TWICE!!!!!! she better rot!

We probably won't know why the family didn't call social services. Around here (Ky.) they come in and look around and if there isn't sufficient reason they don't take the child ,just start home visits ,maybe.Oh yeah the best part is if they don't take the child they usually tell who called. There is no such thing as anonymous anymore. So knowing that she would probably never let them see him again they may have made the same decision that a lot of people have made. They kept quiet to stay a part of his life.I don't know any of these people but, there are a lot of people who make the same decision every day "Next time I'll call somebody."

The people who thought she was not caring for the child and kicked her out are equally responsible for this. May they all answer to this....

Why do we stop these people from killing themselves?

I don't understand why people kicked her child out as well, when they knew damn well he was endangered while in her care. As far as I am concerned, they are morally speaking just as responsible as the mother in the senseless (and torturous) death of this child. In fact, their actions may have precipitated the murder, since it actually makes sense that she would believe no one cared for her son when he was kicked out as well, though he was an innocent young child.

If they turned a blind eye to the danger that child faced, they did so at their own peril, and that baby's blood is now on their hands. Any one of those people could have saved that child's life, but they chose not to do so. Shame on every single one of them. I have no sympathy for anyone who puts a young child out on the street like that, regardless of the situation with the mother. None. I say prosecute every damn one of them for child neglect.
