Rebecca Taylor Dropped Her Price - Jailed After Attempting To Sell Baby For Rent Money

Charleston, West Virginia (The Weekly Vice) -- Rebecca Sue Taylor, a 19-year-old Charleston woman was charged Wednesday with trying to sell her 5-month-old son for rent money.

According to police, Taylor offered to sell her baby to another woman - identified as Leigh Burr - for $10,000.

Investigators say Taylor told the woman she wasn't able to bond with the baby and needed the money to buy a new apartment. When the woman didn't take the deal, Taylor allegedly dropped her price to $5,000.

The two women had allegedly talked about Taylor serving as a surrogate mother for Burr when the alleged offer was made. Police became aware of the plot when Burr went to police, according to Charleston Police Sgt E.L. Hodges.

Taylor was booked into the South Central Regional Jail on a charge of offering the purchase or sale of a child. Bond in her case was set at $2,500.

The Weekly Vice Opinion:

Hold the presses. $2,500 bond? Really? Is the legal system out in Charleston so mangled that a woman can sell a child and yet walk out of jail on a pathetic $2,500 bond?

Why not let her out with a new pair of shoes and a cherry Lime-Aid while you're at it?

With the real estate market in the toilet, she probably could have talked the landlady down to half a baby plus utilities.

hey, in her defense, atleast she tried to sell the baby and not kill it..

She looks like she is a few fries short of a happy meal. I agree the bond seems awful low. I just pray that this baby is placed for adoption since she already stated she did not want it and could not bond with it i say place the poor baby with a adoptive parent and let the poor child have a chance at a real life.

Could not bond with it? Say What?

Let's get one thing straight. Any mother who holds and loves and cares for a baby is going to bond with it.

It's pretty evident to me that she didn't do those things.

A baby isn't going to bond with a mother who throws it him/her in a cradle and then shuts the door to drown out the crying.

You have to put some sort of effort in.

Ironic but now she's gonna get free rent paid for by us. Hmmmm...

BTW you have to sell them as babies because NO ONE wants to buy teenagers!

Yes I agree that her bond is low, but maybe the judge thought... Humm since stupid bitch can't pay rent w/o selling baby, she obviously can't come up with $2,500.00 .... I of course could be wrong but just a thought...

Hmmmmm. Anonymous said "give her credit for not killing it". Well yes u have a point i guess, however i dont think she was looking for a new apartment. Look at her picture she evidently needed drug money and was selling the last precious thing she owned. I could be wrong but a mother will bond with her baby unless she is focused on some other behaviour. WV needs to update their laws or something the bond is so ridiculous! I bet it was created in the 17th century haha!

The legal system in WV is so lenient its ridiculous. The same people keep getting arrested over and over again and still get probation. You can drive drunk and be arrested for killing someone three times before you do more than a year.
