The Facebook Page Merman-Smith Tried To Delete (cached)
Rochester, New York (The Weekly Vice) -- "I have your luggage and I'm holding it for ransom. I want $700 in unmarked bills if you want to ever see your luggage again. Oh.....and before you get any wise ideas about calling the police, the Samsonite gorilla is here just dying to jump on your luggage if i get any grief from you."
William Merman-Smith, a 25-year-old Greece, New York Man was arrested Sunday after allegedly stealing luggage from a New York airport and then demanding money before he would return it.
Investigators say Merman-Smith took luggage from the Greater Rochester International Airport on March 15th and 16th. He then emailed one of the victims and demanded $700 for it's return.
Authorities were able to locate Merman-Smith by tracking down his i.p. address. Airport security video was also obtained, which reportedly captured the theft.
Officers obtained a warrant and paid Merman-Smith a visit, recovering a computer along with the stolen luggage. State police returned the luggage to all three victims.
Merman-Smith was booked into Monroe County Jail on charges of 2nd-degree grand larceny by extortion, 3rd-degree grand larceny and petit larceny. After pleading not guilty to the charges, he was released without bail.

Airports are covered with cameras. It's amazing someone would be so stupid as to think he could get away with this.
i think he got this idea from watching a 1970s detective show...
looks like one of the dudes from Men In Trees. And no I don't watch that show, but my wife did.
what was the point in arresting him if he was just going to plead not guilty and then they would let him go without bail? that seems pretty dumb to me.
Here at Lambert airport in Missouri there were a few employees stealing whatever they wanted out of bags. They were dumb as well but not as dumb as this dude!
