San Jose, California (The Weekly Vice) -- Rita Brum, a 24-year-old physical education teacher at Mount Pleasant High School in San Jose, CA, was arrested after a girl's mother discovered Brum was having a lesbian relationship with her daughter.
According to investigators, the San Jose Police Department was notified Jan 18th of a child molestation incident involving Brum and a 17-year-old student. The inappropriate relationship was discovered by the student's mother, who allegedly found a love letter from Brum to her daughter.
Brum was arrested February 26 and indicted Thursday on charges of having a sexual relationship with a minor.
Investigators say the teacher and student met early in the school year. As the relationship grew, the two began spending time together on and off campus. The relationship allegedly turned intimate in December, when Brum invited the teen over to her house to watch a hockey game.
During the encounter, the two engaged in a "long passionate kiss" that left the teen "freaked out," according to the student. After a few additional kisses on and off campus, the relationship evolved into a sexual one, according to police.
The relationship reportedly ended when the girl's mother discovered the letter.
After confronting her daughter, the teen's mother found Brum and confronted her in a hair pulling brawl that drew the attention of police.
Brum was interviewed, jailed and then released on a $15,000 bond. Brum was also terminated from her job at the school after school members voted to fire her.

I cant' help but think that when the one person is seventeen and the other's 24, it may be illegal, but it really isn't a big deal. Seventeen year olds are going to be having sex anyway, probably with 24 year olds. At that point , the whole teacher thing doesn't seem as twisted.
That's true. It's still wrong, but I wouldnt say it's shocking like some of these other neanderthals. But still, you'd think these teachers would eventually learn.
I'm with Bri, I know plenty of 18 year olds who date 25 year olds, which is completely legal. In fact, lots of married couples have 7 year age gaps. I think that the age of 17 should have a little bit of leeway. People shouldn't have to go to jail because the government decided 18 is the age of adulthood. Doesn't it all depend on biology?
Though I mostly agree with Bri and Steve, what would you say Steve if your 17 yr old daughter was "freaked out" by an encounter with her 24 year old male teacher and had a sexual relationship with him for 4 months? Would you still say it was just biology?
Ahh, I laughed so hard when I read this story. Not that another kid got sucked into another adult's perverted reindeer games, but because of the comments from fools like Bri and Chaz. Oh for shame, for shame... You really should stick to one side of the fence or another. Make up your minds, people,either a teenager is or isn't responsible for making a decision to have intimate relations with an adult (whether homo or hetero). It was from a story about Roger Bingham posted on Sunday March 8th. I posted twice under anonymous, but someone else came into the mix, talking about people being married young many years ago in our culture. That anon comment I did NOT make, though Bri certainly thought I did as you can see from her response...

its more than about age...its the failure of an adult in a supervisory position over a minor to control their sexual urges.
The crime isn't related to age but to the fact a teacher is in a custodial and supervisory position over a student. In most places, academic and corporate, intimate relationships are not allowed between superiors and subordinates. At the high school level it becomes even murkier since the teachers have the ability to make or break a student concerned about his/her future. Not only can a teacher trade favorable reviews and grades for sex, the student can blackmail the teacher for favorable treatment.
It is the same principle with prison guards, police officers and other governmental authorities who interact in our lives.
OMG!! I freakin know her!! i am so in shock. i knew her in high school!! this is crazy. i think its ridiculous that people would hold 17 year olds responsible, your brain is still developing way in your teens, even when youre 18. the adult, the 24 year old should know right from wrong and not have invited a freakin student into your home. she is so dumb.
I knew this girl growing up, I went to school with her and can say that I am surprised and that she should have known better. I think good people do bad things sometimes, but it doesn't dismiss the fact that she broke the law. Those laws are what (usually) protect our children from being part of sexual relationships with adults (at least while at school). I agree that she should be fired and have her teaching license revoked. It's a shame she made such a bad decision as she has ruined her life at such a young age. But as to the age difference-there is a huge difference between their ages in sexual maturity. I agree that teeneagers have sex. I have been with my husband since we were 15 (now 23). If I were at this time to date or have sex with the 15 year old version of my husband I would consider that child molestation. It's one thing for 2 sexually inexperienced peers at school to be experimenting and another thing altogether for an adult teacher to be teaching more than just PE. No matter gay or straight, I believe that she should get the same treatment as other child molesters-TERMINATION, SOME JAIL TIME, AND REGISTRATION AS A SEX OFFENDER. Her position as a teacher I think makes her situation worse than just a creepy guy off the streets picking up school children...

Every male here knows it's against the law and WHY it's against the law.
They just get a vision in their heads of a teacher and a student going at it with a double-headed dildo.... and suddenly all common sense is shot to hell.

Hey, I was totally freaked out when I first had sex at age 18, but I knew I couldn't wait to tell my friends, do it again, and do it again. And again.
The only problem here is the breaking of the teacher/student boundary. The age thing isn't and shouldn't be an issue.

Suggestion for better laws
If there really was concern about minors being taken advantage of, or undue influence on school issues because of teacher-student relationships, what about these suggestions:
* minors, before having sex, should have a 30 minute mandatory counselling session, with a 1 day cool off wait period
* teacher-student relations must be disclosed to the school board or some authority.
This would take care of all concerns, and would be much cheaper and more humane thant today’s witch hunt prosecutions.
