Shawnee, Oklahoma (The Weekly Vice) -- James Brewer, a 58-year-old Oklahoma man who thought he was about to die, confessed to murdering a man in 1977. Then he got better. Now he faces murder charges.
A Tennessee murder suspect who has been on the run for 30 years has finally been caught.
Police say a murder suspect that fled after being released on bail, assumed a new identity - evading law enforcement for decades.
"He wanted to cleanse his soul, because he thought he was going to the great beyond," said Shawnee Police Det. Tony Grasso.
Police say Brewer was in the hospital after suffering a stroke when his wife called authorities - informing them that her husband wanted to confess to a murder. After Grasso interviewed the man, he fingerprinted Brewer and contacted Tennessee authorities. Brewer then surrendered himself to Tennessee authorities on Thursday.
Brewer was arrested in the 1977 shooting death of Jimmy Carroll and charged with first-degree murder. Although bail was originally set at $50,000, it was later reduced to $10,000 allowing for Brewer's release from jail. He never went back.
Investigators say Brewer and his wife legally changed their name and moved to Nashville. They then moved to Texas and then Shawnee, Oklahoma where Brewer worked as a machinist for 17 years.
Investigators say Brewer's shot Carroll after he believed the man pursued an affair with his wife Dorothy. Brewer reportedly shot Carroll twice outside a Tennesse service station, leaving him in a pool of blood.
