Lori Smith - Woman Arrested On Domestic Violence Charge For Hugging Boyfriend

Lori Smith Jail Intake Booking

Brooksville, Florida (The Weekly Vice) -- Lori Smith, a 48-year-old Brooksville woman was arrested early Monday morning on battery charges after allegedly hugging her boyfriend.

Since the story summary is really unbelievable, we've included the arrest report with an arrow pointing to the narrative section of the arrest affidavit.

According to the Hernando County Sheriff's office, deputies were summoned to the couple's residence on a domestic battery complaint.

The alleged victim, 50-year-old Kevin Connelly, told deputies that he and his live-in girlfriend had been involved in an altercation that began when his girlfriend attempted to hug him. He also told deputies that She "grabbed him and threw him around the room."

Apparently fed up with Smith's advances, Connelly reportedly pushed his girlfriend onto a bed to get her away from him, according tot he arrest affidavit. Neither Smith or Connelly were injured in the dispute.

The deputy determined that because Connelly did not want to be hugged and Smith persisted in "grabbing" him, that she should be arrested and charged with Domestic Battery.

She was booked into the Hernando County Jail pending a bail hearing on the case.

The Weekly Vice Opinion:

This story ranks right up there in our top ten most ridiculous arrests. While I can CERTAINLY see why the boyfriend would want to be hug-free, a a domestic violence charge is a pretty weenie resolution to the problem. We have children being burned, stabbed and beaten which result in the same charge.

Connelly, it's high time you grow a spine and leave if you don't want this woman's affections. Our tax dollars would be most appreciative.

Just so happens that I am a Police Officer in Florida. I will tell you that the discretion has been robbed from officers in cases like this. I'm sure the Deputy did not want to make this arrest but if it is domestic in nature and the boyfriend pushed the issue the Officer has no choice. It sucks to put it bluntly. I hate having been stripped of something so fundamental as officer discretion. The Silent Majority

Hi Silent Majority....

Trust me when I say - no one who regularly reads this blog would ever want to be in your shoes every day.

We know you spend 80% of your time chasing around the same 10% who keep getting released as fast as they are incarcerated.

But your point is well taken..

As for Connelly, I still think he needs to grow a spine, leave, run for dear life....whatever it takes.

But tying up the Sheriff's office time with such nonsense isn't the solution he needs to find...

I can remember when Bobby Brown first got in the news for domestic violence. I actually thought how sad that fame and comparative wealth hadn't taught him anything, or given him a greater appreciation for life and relationships. Then I saw his reality show. Seeing he and his wife was a real eye opener for me. You would almost think thw whole show was a mistake, and somehow raw footage leaked out on a weekly basis. Even in their edited version Bobby and Whitney were a train wreck of cultural dysfunction. It was clear, for me at least, that even if Bobby was an abuser his wife gave as much as she took.

In a world where 50% of marriages fail and a large majority of others are miserable as they desperately try to make it, its interesting that people see predator and victim in every single abuse case that pops up in the news. I used to do it a lot myself.

I don't know this couple, but the case seems pretty clear cut from the article. And that picture really makes me feel for the woman.

Nice post Danny.

Reading the report, I have to say this.

Kevin Connelly, I don't believe a word you say. I don't believe she "threw you around the room"... I think you threw yourself around the room.

The only one I see who's truly been abusive here is you, Kevin.

I strongly feel the deputy here arrested the WRONG PERSON.

What are we going to do.... begin having people arrested for bumping into us at the grocery store?

Kevin, you are a limp wristed, pathetic excuse of a man. Have a little self respect and dignity.. Show a little compassion for others. If you don't want to be with her, stop using her.

i faced a similar situation when a female friend did not want me to leave and proceeded to put a bear hug on me.

i pushed her off me and drove home.

i didnt feel the need to file a police report but as i got home...i kept thinking...would she?

Danny, I visit every morning and then later in the afternoon to see comments. The stories are average on some days and then really bizarre on others. I do have to say, today was excellent.

I just can't believe so many crazies are found on a day to day basis.

in ny here they both would of been arrested since he pushed too, so they both should of been arrested i think...but i do think there are REAL crimes out there and this is petty and stupid.

Well, considering most of the comments think her arrest was stupid, unnecessary and ridiculous, what exactly does she have to complain about?

And if you keep shouting, no one will listen to you
