Lawrence, Kansas (The Weekly Vice) -- Cem Basoflas, a 20-year-old sophomore physics major at Kansas University, was arrested Wednesday on charges of criminal sodomy and animal cruelty.
Basoflas, who is attending KU from Istanbul, Turkey, was formally charged Friday with one count of animal cruelty. A second charge of criminal sodomy has also reportedly been added in the case.
Police became aware of the alleged abuse on Wednesday after maintenance crews discovered large amounts of blood inside Basoflas' apartment. When the suspect returned home, he was questioned and then taken into custody, according to Lawrence Police Sgt. Bill Cory.
Police have not revealed many details about the case, except to say that the dog was found dead outside of Basoflas' apartment.
The case comes on the heels of another pending case against Basoflas that involves animal cruelty. Basoflas faces one count of intentionally and maliciously killing, injuring, maiming, torturing, burning or mutilating an animal from an alleged Aug. 16 incident. He pleaded not guilty to that case and was out on bond when he was arrested Wednesday.
Basoflas was booked into the Douglas County Jail in lieu of a $12,000 bond. His next hearing is scheduled for Feb 24.

why is the media so obsessed with this guy? he has not even been convicted yet and his life in the U.S. is already over. the press should be more responsible than this.
Anonymous, read the title. It says "student accused of"....That is not a conviction.
And to answer your question...
The media is likely all over this story for the same reason you came here to read it.
He is sick. USA should get him to the hospital first, otherwise he will do the same again. Also, I am pretty sure that his family may have the same sickness.
