Wichita, Kansas (The Weekly Vice) - Michael Janzen, a 28-year-old Wichita, Kansas man has been charged with killing a 10-month-old girl. A revenge killing, investigators say, because Janzen's girlfriend had decided to break off a relationship with him.
Prosecutors charged Janzen with first-degree murder on Tuesday in the death of 10-month-old Brooklyn Nicole Brown who was pronounced dead on Saturday night after her arrival to a Wichita area hospital on Wednesday.
Investigators say Janzen was babysitting little Brooklyn Wednesday at his home, while the child's mother, Kasey Brown, was at work.
When Brooklyn became injured, Janzen transported the unconscious child to Kasey Brown's place of employment instead of alerting police or calling 911. The child's mother then called emergency responders to the scene.
When authorities interviewed Janzen, he first told them that the child fell in the bathroom and hit her head while he was trying to give her a bath. When medical examiners concluded Janzen's statement did not match up with the child's injuries, he changed his story.
According to detectives, Janzen told them that he had become frustrated with his relationship with Brooklyn's mother after she had decided to get back together with her husband.
Janzen said he "intentionally took Brooklyn and slammed her into the floor 2 times," according to the arrest report. He then stated the baby's "eyes rolled back in her head and he noticed that she became unresponsive," according to the report.
Investigators say Janzen then took the injured child to her mother's workplace. Emergency workers then transported the child to Via Christi Regional Medical Center, where she was hospitalized for severe skull fracture injuries.
Although emergency workers were able to keep Brooklyn alive in intensive care for three days, doctors were forced to pronounce her dead late Saturday night. Brooklyn's death was ruled a homicide by blunt force trauma during the child's autopsy, according to the arrest affidavit.
Janzen is now being held on a $1 million bond and is expected to make a preliminary appearance in court on December 16th. Additional records indicate Janzen requested a public defender and has a divorce case still pending from another relationship.
The Weekly Vice Opinion:
We just don't get it. The insanity of these kinds of cases creates more questions than we'll ever have the answers to. Why take out your grief on a baby? If this woman had decided to go back to her husband, why would she leave that child with a distrought ex-boyfriend? Is it really too much to ask for people to finish up their divorce before dragging your kids all the way through another relationship?
Despite our frustration with this whole case, we also recognize that there's a greiving family here who lost a beautiful baby girl - The biggest and only significant part of this story. For that, we truly send our most sincere condolences to the mother, her family and her extended family.
