Tyler John Hamlen - Man Repeatedly Stabs Own Mother Over Pay Per View Argument

Farr West, Utah (The Weekly Vice) -- Tyler John Hamlen, a 20-year-old Utah man has been arrested after repeatedly stabbing his mother over a pay-per-view conflict.

According to authorities, Tyler Hamlen called 911 Wednesday afternoon claiming that two men dressed in black broke into his family's Farr West home and stabbed his mother.

When Sheriff's deputies arrived, they found 57-year-old Gaylynn Hamlen suffering from multiple stab wounds to her back, chest, abdomen and throat, according to Sheriff's Capt. Klint Anderson.

Deputies on the scene determined that no break in had taken place and suspected Tyler Hamlen of attacking his mother. Hamlen later confessed to the attack, according to Sgt. John Morrow of the Sheriff's department.

According to court documents, the attack occurred when Gaylynn Hamlen became upset with her son for ordering several pay-per-view programs on his grandmother's DirectTV account. Investigators say John Hamlen became angry and began to break things inside the house. When Gaylynn threatened to call police, that's when authorities say Tyler Hamlen snapped.

Authorities say Tyler Hamlen grabbed a knife while his mother wasn't looking and repeatedly stabbed her in the back before dropping the knife.

Police say Tyler Hamlen admitted to grabbing a second knife and resumed the attack when he saw Gaylynn Hamlen attempting to leave the house for help. He allegedly met her at the door, pulled her to the floor and held her down with his knee as he resumed stabbing her in the chest and neck. He then ran outside the house and called authorities.

Gaylynn Hamlen was transported to an area hospital where she underwent surgery for multiple stab wounds and lacerations. The woman was still listed in critical condition Friday morning, but is expected to recover, according to Capt. Anderson.

Authorities said Tyler has a history of mental illness, bipolar disorder and has had incidents of violent tendencies in the past. He was booked into the Weber County Jail on a charge of attempted criminal homicide.

The Weekly Vice Opinion:

The curious aspect of this story is what a possible outcome might be, considering Tyler Hamlen has been declared mentally ill. That point would often-times mitigate the possible sentence in a case like this, but I don't think it should in this instance.

Tyler knew what he did was wrong - because he fabricated a story about it. He knew what he did was harmful because he frantically called 911 afterwards.

His defense attorney might claim he had been spitting out his meds, but mental illness should not be used as a means of mitigating every case.

Hey.... I can hardly figure out how to use the damn pay-per-view.... so if he can figure it out, there must be at least a few marbles rolling around upstairs. Pad the jail bars if you like.... but this maniac shouldn't see sunlight again until he's too old to attack anyone else.
