Athens, Georgia (The Weekly Vice) -- Two college students have been arrested on felony aggravated battery charges after "seriously disfiguring" a 20-year-old girl with chemical burns while she slept.
David Neyhart, a 19-year-old student at the University Of Georgia and Matthew Klein, a 20-year-old student at Gainesville College are accused of putting silver nitrate on a female UGA student's body - seriously disfiguring her and causing second-degree burns.
According to investigators, the incident happened on October 15 at an off-campus residence where the woman was reportedly staying as a guest.
"It appears they took silver nitrate and used it to write on her body. They wrote a term on her back and did other drawings, somehow made with marks all over her body that caused second-degree burns," said UGA police chief Jimmy Williamson.
The attackers allegedly caused the injury in a "malicious" way, resulting in scarring to her arms, chest and back," according to the arrest affidavit.
Authorities said the victim knew one of the attackers, but did not identify which one. Nor did they elaborate on what the motive was.
"There was some hesitation on her part to pursue this criminally," said Williamson. "We felt the injuries were to a point where we could proceed without her consent."
Matthiew Klein was charged with aggravated battery and reckless conduct. He turned himself into Clarke County Jail on Sunday before being released on a $5,600 bond.
David Neyhart was charged with aggravated battery, reckless conduct and possession of a dangerous drug or chemical. He turned himself in on Monday and was released the same day on a $6,600 bond.

I'm not sure how you sleep through chemical burns all over your back, front and arms - and then be too fainthearted to even see the bastard prosecuted for disfiguring you... but I have to ask where this girl's parents are. It's obvious that someone needs to intervene in this mess.

These two are going to have a miserable life behind bars. I get the feeling these two wrote the word, slut-or something similar- on the girls body. Anon, you are right. They did label her with an obscene term with the chemical. Police haven't released exactly what the word was, but they characterized it as a "disparaging" word.

If you take a look at the wiki page liked at the end of the article, it shows pictures of what the stains and burns look like on the skin.
Just imagine having deep purple scars all over your body and arms - for the rest of your life.
Do these two hate this girl or are they just malicious? If they hate her because she somehow made their lives miserable, at least we have an understanding of someone being pushed too far. That wouldn't excuse such a heinous act; college is only four years long, this young woman has the rest of her life to look at these scars.
If they were intentionally malicious - and it makes no difference if they were ignorant of the effects of the silver nitrate - in their actions on a girl that had done nothing to them then they deserve all of the scorn that could be heaped upon them. Their parents are deserving of terrible shame that they could raise two beasts that are completely without conscience. As a father I simply can not imagine the shame I would feel.
The lives of these very young people have changed forever, and its definitely not good.
Imagine being the parent of this girl and finding out that these two only get something like 6 months in jail.
If these two snot nosed brats don't get some real time, it will be a horrible miscarraige of justice. Does anyone know what the sentencing guidelines are for aggravated battery in Georgia?

One of these young men is a very good person who seems to have gotten involved with something he should not have. I know this young man and he is kind and has wonderful parents. You can't blame a parent for what a grown child does. Again he is a fine young man who will be paying for a terrible mistake.
If i was that girl's father, jail time would be the least of these 2's problems.

Even though the act was a crime, why is the girl hesitant to file charges? How did she "sleep" through burns on several locations of her body? Is she totally innocent? What are ALL the facts?

This was probably meant as some sort of prank like coloring all over the drunkest person at the party. Perhaps they didn't realize the potential damage silver nitrate could have. They Probably assumed it would only dye her skin black. The reason we have a legal system is to not only determine guilt but to determine just how malicious their intent was. Also if you notice that the girl is hesitant to press criminal charges maybe its a sign that the police are trying to make this case a bigger deal than it is. In my last post i forgot to comment that this incident is only an attempt by the Athens-Clarke County to go after the drunken college students.
I know the family of one of the young men as well, and it is beyond me how anyone on here can judge an article from the news media who routinely sensationalizes things like this. The true story is rather tame, and the girl has been over to the house that it occurred at AFTER teh arrest took place. She feels terrible and partially responsible. Silver nitrate has been used in pranks for decades. The problem here was the young lady had an allegic reaction. Was what they did stupid? Was it a bit lude? yes to both. Should they be punished? Yes, but not have their lives ruined from an incident like this. I believe this will be settled and I even believe the young men will stay in school. Of course, the media wont' publish an article about that.

Like several people have said on here, this article has some serious spin to it.
This is what actually happened:
The girl passed out at a party. Like it or not, it's pretty common for the people to write and draw on anyone who passes out at a party. The two guys used a silver nitrate pen to write on her as a prank. It stayed on her skin for too long, and she had a reaction to it. The next day she went to the student health center, and they called campus police who, in turn, called ACC police.
I know some of you idiots are picturing two guys pouring a bottle of acid on a girl. Google "silver nitrate pens". That is what they used. Those pens are used for all sorts of things such as writing on pool liners and other things outdoors, because the ink is really hard to wash off. You can buy them at your local pool supply store.
One of the boys used to work for a pool supply store, and the people who worked there would write on eachother as a prank because it's so hard to wash off.
They did not know she would have a reaction and end up with burns. Now you self-righteous people are saying they would probably also molest children and all sorts of other ridiculous things.
It was a drunk prank gone wrong. They should be punished to be sure. But get off of your high-horses and find out some facts before condemning them to the lowest depths of Hell.

First of all what she got was the same as what the countless number of girls get when they pay someone to brand them with henna. Case in point, yes I am sure they will pay a price for what they have done. But the price should not be anything like what they are being charged with. People should realize that the girl in question did not want to press charges against either one of the boys. Her skin was not burned, and she even went to the lawyers office with Neyhart. So for all of you you think you know what your talking about you dont.
She's now a witness for the prosecution. It doesn't matter if she "wants" to press charges,or not. The authorities have found enough evidence to charge Beavis and Butthead. Sounds like to me,the female is being hounded by these two to refute the charges. What will be interesting is testimony from any and or medical personnel involved.

The whole thing is sad, whatever the exact story is. Whether she wanted to press charges or not, has nothing to do with the crime. And she should feel good enough about herself NOT to have a boyfriend who would write malicious remarks. And as for the boys, I know them both, and if they are smart enough to go to college, they should be smart enough to know that silver nitrate (as drugs and many other things) CAN and DO have side effects. They are just stupid, spoiled and deserved to be punished!
I am a research chemist who works with pure silver nitrate. If I am not wearing gloves it stains my fingers for a couple of weeks by depositing silver. I have never noticed any burns. It's possible that she had a reaction to another chemical in the pen. It doesn't sound as if they meant to hurt her, which, despite the rabid posts, IS an important factor to consider.
And regardless of the wiki page, AgNO3 is a relatively harmless chemical.
Liz, I used to handle regular lawn fertilizer with my hands until researchers began linking it to lukeimia in children.
If a chemical is potent enough to die skin pigment for weeks, then I think handling it with your bare hands is kind of foolish.
Chemicals like oven cleaner seem harmless, but left on the skin long enough, can be toxic and burn/disfigures skin.
I think it's irresponsible to be a professional - yet - posting information that minimizes the potential harm a chemical can impose - particulary knowing allergic reactions to chemicals are common.
