North Port, Florida (The Weekly Vice) -- John Richard Lynn, a 53-year-old Florida man has been arrested and charged with filing a false police report after police say he shot himself to collect disability benefits.
North Port Police rushed to the 1400 block of Tamiami Trail on August 30 after receiving a report that a man was robbed at gunpoint and then shot in the chest. When police arrived, they found John Lynn and immediately rushed him to Lee County Memorial Hospital by helicopter, where he was treated for a gunshot injury.
Lynn told detectives that two men approached him behind his business, pointed a gun at his head and demanded his wallet. Lynn told police he then knocked the gun away from his head, but in doing so, was shot in the chest.
Investigators now say however that Lynn's claims are false. After a thorough investigation, detectives now believe a robbery never occurred and that Lynn purposely shot himself in order to claim disability benefits to off set his probation costs.
John Lynn is currently on probation following a conviction in January, 2008 for burglary and larceny charges. He was reportedly out on probation at the time of the shooting.
John Lynn was arrested Monday night on charges of filing a police report, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and violation of probation.

this is my father.
i miss him very much :(
he ended up getting 26 months in prison for this...
Nice to meet you Chelsea. That sentence seems kind of harsh to me considering far worse cases here that end with far less jail time. Ridiculous considering the person he hurt was himself. No one else.
I think it's awesome that you stand by your Dad, come what may. Wish more families would do the same.
yeah, it is ridiculous. he hurt HIMSELF and got that much time... it sucks.
and i would stand by my daddy through anything, he was the best dad in the world growing up, he just got sick and went through some hard times... it's not his fault. drugs take over people and it wasn't him thinking, it was the drugs... i'm kind of happy he's in prison, it's giving him a chance to get clean and get his life back...
