Janet Landrum – Florida Woman Arrested A Tenth Time For Driving Under The Influence

Bradenton, Florida (The Weekly Vice) -- Janet Landrum, a 41 year old Ellenton, Florida woman has been arrested for her 10th DUI offense. Local authorities call it a record breaking number for the Manatee County area.

According to Manatee County authorities, Landrum was arrested at about 2:30 a.m. on Saturday for her 10th DUI after leaving a local club in Bradenton, Florida . Sheriff's deputies say the woman told them that she had only consumed two glasses of wine.

A Manatee County Sheriff's deputy pulled Landrum over after observing her weaving in and out of traffic, tapping her breaks needlessly and executing wild lane changes. When the arresting officer administered a breath test, Landrum allegedly failed when she blew a 0.112 blood-alcohol level, which is well above the 0.08 legal limit.

Authorities also spoke to the passenger who told deputies they had just met Landrum at the club and allowed her to drive because (the passenger) was too drunk to drive.

Landrum has several prior DUI arrests that include a DUI in Kentucky in 1988, A DUI in Tennessee in 1988 and 1993, a DUI in Georgia in 1999 and 2001 and DUI offenses in Florida in 2000, 2001, 2004 and 2005 according to Manatee County Sheriff's Office Spokesperson, Dave Bristow.

Florida law enforcement records indicate that she was initially charged with an additional DUI offense in Florida, however that charge was later reduced. Landrum has also been arrested multiple times for driving on a suspended and/or revoked driver's license. In addition to the DUI charge, Landrum has also been charged with driving on a suspended/revoked license.

Although it is currently unclear if Lundrum was convicted of all 10 DUI arrests, Bristow said the she was convicted of at least some of the charges. Thus far it appears however that Landrum was not sentenced to jail time in the instances she was convicted for. Her convictions appeared to result in probation.

While authorities say some jail time is recommended after a 3rd DUI conviction, the first DUI is only a misdemeanor in Florida. Officials also blamed an inability to access records where previous DUI convictions exist, when they occurred in other states several years ago.

A Florida Spokeswoman with MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) said that Landrum's case bolsters the organization's call to make a first DUI a felony offense requiring the installation of an ignition inter-lock system that disables vehicles from being driven if the driver has been drinking alcohol.

The Weekly Vice Opinion:

While this might be a local for the highest number DUI offenses in Manatee County, our current all time record holder (that we've reported on) comes from Jesse James Hogan, who was arrested on 13 DUI offenses a few months ago. Interested in other offenses we've reported on that involve crazy people driving drunk? Check these numbskulls out!

People will continue to leave bars drunk until 2 things ahppen.

First - Business enforcement. Bars should be held accountable for continuing to sell to them long after common sense tells you to. If bars had to pay (even) a modest $100 fine for every drunk that gets pulled over after tanking up, then there will be less drunk drivers. This would be a no excuses, no forgiveness policy - no legal squeezing between cracks; serve a drunk - pay a fine! However, if the bar calls the police immediately when a patron goes to drive away, the fine could be cut to $50 by a kindly judge.

Second - individual enforcement. Drunks need to be held accountable. A first DUI (non-injury, non-accident) should be considered a lucky learning lesson w/stiff fines. A 2nd DUI should be a mandatory 6 month sentence in the county jail. A 3rd should bring at least 2 years in prison, more offenses should cause additional stiff prison time.

I am not anti drinking. I drink - at home - or I have cab fare or a designated non-drinking driver with me. Until society gets serious, drunks won't get serious either.

Lundrum's license should be confiscate and ban for driving for lifetime, this is the only way he can no longer abuse DUI charges. If still pursue without the license should be put to jail. She's not taking the laws seriously.
