Tavares, Florida (The Weekly Vice) -- Chad Carey, 39 and Diana Carey, 42, have been arrested on multiple charges of child abuse and neglect. The arrest comes after a prior abuse conviction and lengthy history of abuse/neglect issues that have been logged by the Florida Department of Families and Children (DFC).
Chad and Diana Carey were arrested on Sunday after police were alerted to alleged neglect, following 6 reports and 16 case referrals that were logged at the Florida Department Of Children And Families.
On May 20th, investigators began to conduct interviews with two of the couple's children while they were at school.
During the interview, the boys told investigators that their father, Chad Carey, often beat them with belts and extension cords, according to court documents.
According to authorities, the boys were covered with bruises and sores and were described as "extremely unsanitary" and generally unhealthy. The children told investigators that they had not bathed in several days because the family home did not have running water.
The couple's 8 year old child had rope burns around his neck and a large, infected cut on one foot.
The beatings were not limited to just the children, according to court documents. The boys reportedly also told investigators that Chad Carey hit their dog so hard in the head with a dog leash, that it "does not walk right anymore."
Chad Carey was also arrested and charged with child abuse in 2007, after beating one of his sons. Carey pleaded guilty to a reduced charge and was sentenced to probation.
Chad Carey is now facing three counts of child abuse, three counts of child neglect and one count of animal abuse.
Diana Carey faces three counts of child neglect.
The couple is currently being held without bond at the Lake County Jail.
The Weekly Vice Opinion:
We're wondering how these parents were able to maintain full custody of their kids following a conviction of abuse and a lengthy history of reports into child services of their continued behavior towards the kids.
More and more, kids have to pretty much be murdered before authorities really begin to get the message We're glad to see that the kids held on long enough to finally get the protection they deserve.
