UPDATE:
This case has reportedly been dismissed due to the prosecution's inability to get the alleged victim to testify
Original Report:
Iowa City, IA (The Weekly Vice) -- Collene K Solberg, a 38 year old special eduction teacher at Iowa City West High School was arrested and charged Feb. 21st with committing lascivious acts on a minor.
Authorities contend that Solberg had sexual contact with a 17 year old male student between the months of June 2007 through September of 2007.
Solberg, who is no longer with the district, passed notes and poems to the student and later bought him a cell phone to use. The student has also moved to a different school and didn't attend this school when the affair occurred. Police were alerted by the victim's family in November, according to authorities in the case.
The student was not below Iowa's age of consent laws. Authorities explain that charges were filed because Solbergs teacher status places her in a position of authority over the student, and her actions violate laws that outlaw contact between a student and a teacher.
West High Principal Jerry Arganbright said that Solberg worked at the school since the start of the 02-03 school year. She worked in the school’s special education Learning Center.
Solberg attended a first hearing and was released from Johnson County Jail after posting bond.
